Playa constantly evaluates the progress of the high-end players to gauge the progression of the game. As you may expect, that portion of players is very, very small at this point, but the designers understand that it'll only get larger with time. As such, features are created or modified to address this issue when the time feels right.

after that: items should max out at 10 mio

visible: level 305 - 10h guard is not enough for 10 mio, since one of the highest players Gumb (s1.sfgame.de, Zwergenreich) keeps the stats for his current level:
guard = 350044 Gold/h @ level 329, for 10h 3,500,440 gold

On Gold weekend events it would be 17,502,200 for 10 hours GD.

Which is a pity because no one wants to work for free.

On a side note the phone app will display more than 10 million gold till you change to the character screen. So perhaps 10 million is an arbitrary limit set by the developers rather than a restriction of the flash platform. Fingers crossed they increase the limit one day.
