Default Hurricane Sandy

C'mon, its only a Cat 1

In Florida, we eat Cat 1s for breakfast!

I've been through a Cat 3, believe me, Cat 1 is nothing!

It's not the category that's so damaging. It is the immense size and slowness of the storm. In addition, it's turned from a hurricane to a nor'easter since it hit land.

The hurricane classification system is flawed if you use only that as a measure of whether or not you should and to what extent

Evacuate
Prepare
Plan for the worst
communicate (by the government) dangers to the public

Storm surge and flooding is the greatest killer of human life and responsible for the most damage during hurricanes and this was the highest recorded surge in history in many locations, specifically New York. The size and low pressure of the system (lowest in history of the region), caused the extreme storm surge. Wind speed is just the most sexy overrated way to track these storms.

This storm is likely to end up being either the most or top 3-5 disasters in the history of the country. Yes this too will pass, but it is going to very painful.

And its not over yet...

I went through that and another. Andrew was a mess, but it affected a much smaller area. Sandy was making landfall on the NJ coast while Canada was getting pounded by 70-80 kmph winds from the storm and West Virgina was getting snow.
