It is not your top end damage that is causing the greater damage, but the higher average damage. You could find a weapon with damage of 10-100 (55), with Strength +44 and it won't do better than what you have now.

What do you mean about multipliers for strength? Your base stats go up based on whatever you spend for them, and the calculation for each range, percentage, or total is exactly as listed when you hover your cursor over the amount. If you want to know what your chance for a critical hit is, hover your mouse over the critical hit number and it gives you the equation.

The reason for increasing damage, is because the game automatically increases damage per attack (it doesn't matter if you hit or miss). This rate has not been figured out yet. A critical hit is supposed to double damage after taking into account armor, resistance, and increased damage up to the maximum bonus.
